The Beginning
Built as a private mansion for industrialist Marcus Veil, this Victorian beauty on Shadow Lane was the talk of Vancouver. The place hosted some pretty wild gatherings back in the day - poets, artists, folks who weren't afraid of getting a little weird with their creativity. Marcus had this thing for mystery novels, apparently spent half his fortune collecting first editions.
The Transformation
After Marcus passed (under mysterious circumstances, naturally), his daughter Catherine converted the mansion into Vancouver's first mystery-themed hotel. She'd run these elaborate murder mystery weekends where guests would dress up, play detective, the whole nine yards. It became the spot for anyone looking for something different than your typical hotel stay.
Modern Mysteries
The swinging sixties brought new owners who kept the mystery vibe but added some serious luxury upgrades. Air conditioning, private bathrooms, a proper restaurant - all while maintaining that gothic charm that made the place special. They started hosting theatre troupes who'd perform these elaborate dinner shows that guests still talk about today.
The Renaissance
We closed down for eighteen months to do a complete overhaul. Stripped everything back to the bones, restored the original woodwork, then rebuilt with modern luxury in mind. Added the spa, upgraded the suites with smart tech (hidden behind period details, of course), and brought in a Michelin-trained chef for our restaurant. The mystery theatre got a proper stage, lighting, the works.
